Hatiya's Politics

Hatiya Upazila forms the whole of the Noakhali-6 parliamentary constituency, a seat that has existed since Bangladesh's first general election in 1973. Because the constituency's boundary matches the upazila exactly, national election results here double as a fairly direct read on local political sentiment, without the boundary complications many other seats have.

In the most recent national election, NCP (National Citizen Party) candidate Abdul Hannan Masud was elected from Noakhali-6, one of the few seats nationally not won by BNP, defeating the BNP candidate by a substantial margin. Locally, politics on Hatiya is also heavily shaped by the elected Union Parishads, the Upazila Parishad and the Municipality — the layer of government residents deal with most directly for everyday services.
