Hatiya's Agriculture

Farming is the largest single source of livelihood on Hatiya, employing close to two out of every five working residents directly, with another quarter working as agricultural labourers. Around 28,400 hectares of the upazila are cultivable, split between land that yields one, two or three crops a year — nearly half the cultivable area produces two crops annually — and about three-quarters of it is under irrigation.

Rice is the dominant crop, grown across most of that cultivable land, alongside jute, pulses, oilseed, sugarcane and potato. Betel nut and betel leaf are Hatiya's most distinctive cash crops, grown widely enough to be among the upazila's main exports to the mainland, alongside coconut and banana from its char land and homesteads.
