Hatiya's Coast

Hatiya's entire southern and eastern edge is open Bay of Bengal coastline, and its western and northern boundaries run through the Shahbazpur and Hatiya channels of the lower Meghna estuary — making almost the whole upazila a coastline of one kind or another rather than a landlocked interior. Namar Bazar beach on Nijhum Dwip is the best-known stretch of sand, but char shoreline extends around most of the upazila's perimeter.

This coast is unusually dynamic even by Bangladeshi standards: the northern shoreline has retreated roughly 12 km over recent decades even as new char land accretes elsewhere, so the coastline residents see today is measurably different from the one their parents knew. The coast is also Hatiya's main working landscape for fishing communities, whose boats work the Meghna's mouth and the open bay for hilsa and other catch.
